Institute for Peace and Democracy is established as initiated by President of Republic of Indonesia, DR. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. The Institute establishment is strong supported by Foreign Affair Department of Republic of Indonesia in collaboration with Udayana University in Bali. The Institute was launched at the same day as the launch of Bali Democratic Forum on Wednesday, December 10th 2008 by The President. This was a follow-up of MOU that was signed on November 10th 2008 by Foreign Minister, DR. Hasan Wirayudha, and Udayana University Rector, Prof. DR. dr. I Made Bakta, SPpD (KHOM).

The Institute is a non-profit organization and attached with Bali Democratic Forum. The Forum for Asia Pacific Region aims to develop democracy in reaching peacefully, throughout sharing experiences in politic and democracy to have best practices and toward Center of ExcellenceThe Institute itself is an organization to execute idea, initiatives, programs which are decided by Bali Democratic Forum. Thus the Institute will perform analysis, investigations, dialog among expertise, researches, seminars, roadshow, and publications of political and democratic inventions. These strengthen The President optimism that peace will be realized throughout the Forum and Institute activities. As both are in Bali, Governor of Bali in his speech expressed proudly that Bali will add one more brand as The Island of Peace and Democracy beside The Island of God
